The Trailhead is operated by the US Forest Services (USFS), providing access to USFS lands. Although Boulder County provides access to the trailhead, they do not manage the trails. During peak season, the trailhead can get crowded, and parking can be challenging. But fear not, a hassle-free shuttle service is offered from May 26th through October 8th, 2023. To catch the shuttle, simply arrive at the Nederland High School parking lot and hop aboard the Hessie Trailhead Shuttle, which will take you to the trailhead in just 10 minutes. The shuttle service runs from May 26 to October 8, 2023, and operates from Friday to Sunday. There are special hours for holidays, please check the website for change in hours of operations. 

The shuttle arrives approximately every 15 minutes, so you won’t have to wait long to catch a ride. Hiking with your dog? No problem! Dogs on a leash are welcome aboard. However, bikes are not due minimal space. There’s plenty of space, however, for hikers of all ages and skill sets, their trusted canine companion, and hiking gear. If you want to bring a bike, you will need to find another mode of transportation or arrange for a shuttle service that can accommodate bikes.

The shuttle departs from Nederland High School, but may vary depending on the day. Please remember to check the website before planning your hike. From July 28, the Friday service departs from Nederland RTD Park-n-Ride. The shuttle service operates from 6am to 6pm on Fridays and Sundays, and from 6am to 8pm on Saturdays. Starting September 4, it will operate from 6am to 6pm. 

The Hessie Trailhead is situated in the Arapaho National Forest, just outside of Nederland, Colorado. The trail is roughly 7.5 miles long and is rated as moderate difficulty. Hikers can expect to gain about 1,600 feet in elevation on the way to Blue Lake, where they will be rewarded with breathtaking views of towering mountain peaks and crystal-clear alpine water. The trail is also a great place to observe local wildlife. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a novice looking to explore the great outdoors, the Hessie Trailhead is a great place to start! 

However, reaching the trailhead can be difficult, as it requires navigating a narrow, unpaved road that is easiest accessed by 4WD vehicles.

Parking can be a challenge here, especially during the summer months when it is impossible.  Only designated parking is available along Fourth of July Road, and parking along the road is only allowed between signs. Be sure to park within nine feet of another vehicle to accommodate other hikers, and be cautious not to block the road. To avoid getting fined or towed, taking the Hessie Trailhead Shuttle Service from Nederland is your best bet. Especially since the season is such a busy season to enjoy the trails, don’t risk a fine or a tow. Take a shuttle from Green Ride Shuttle Services, and relax. 

Camping is not allowed around the trailhead or in the parking area. Alternative campsites can be found at nearby Indian Peaks Campground, a laid-back campground highlighting beautiful mountain views. To guarantee yourself a spot, it’s best to reserve in advance.

Please note that overnight parking is not allowed in the Nederland High School parking lot. So if you decide to backpack and shuttle during a weekend, you may need to find an alternative place to park. You may park overnight on CR 130/Eldora Rd in front of the baseball field or in front of the football/soccer field, but not in front of the high school parking lot. However, be aware that these parking spots can also get full quickly, especially on weekends.
